Please join us on Saturday 26 September, 6-8pm, for the launch of Matsui Kosei: Master of Neriage, the accompanying publication to the current exhibition at Margaret Howell, Wigmore Street, London.
Matsui Kosei (1927–2003) was one of Japan’s foremost practitioners of neriage, a technique of combining and manipulating different coloured clays to create intricate patterns within the body of a vessel. The exhibition brings together works from across his career, exploring his distinctive approach to colour, pattern and material, and his transformation of a traditional ceramic technique into a highly individual form of artistic expression.
Published by de Biousse & West in a limited edition of 250 copies, Matsui Kosei: Master of Neriage brings together works from the exhibition with archival material and newly commissioned texts examining the artist’s practice and his place within the history of modern Japanese ceramics.
