If I wanted to understand the cities and countries I visited, I had to start not with the good old things, but, as Brecht put it, the bad new ones. That was why I wanted to write about Mostar: I suspected I would find the same kind of people as I had in Ljubljana, Zagreb, Belgrade, Pristina and Skopje in the last decade: queer/feminist artist-activists, who were realistic about the flaws of Yugoslav society while lamenting its awful end, and wishing its socialist principles hadn’t been destroyed by nationalism to be replaced by shock doctrine neoliberalism.

MOSTAR is a new book by Juliet Jacques published by the Tenderbooks Imprint. Taking form as a travelogue-diary, Juliet Jacques documents and reflects upon her recent visit to the city at the heart of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s history, engaging with its past and future through dialogue with its present.

About Juliet Jacques
Juliet Jacques (b. 1981) is a writer, filmmaker and academic based in London. She has published seven books, including Trans: A Memoir (2015), the short story collections Variations (2021) and The Woman in the Portrait (2024) and a novella, Monaco (2023). Her fiction, journalism and essays have appeared in The Guardian, New York Times, Frieze, London Review of Books and many other publications; her short films have screened in galleries and festivals worldwide. She teaches at the Royal College of Art and hosts the arts discussion podcast Suite (212). She has played football for Clapton Community FC, Horley Town and Surrey.

MOSTAR is the third book published as part of the Open Narratives programme. 

Open Narratives is a publishing and events programme highlighting LGBTQIA+ voices through a series of newly commissioned printed matter, live readings, exhibitions and workshops. Open Narratives at Tenderbooks is funded by Arts Council England.
