SHOTGUN SEAMSTRESS ZINE 1-6 - Osa Atoe
ATOE, Osa.
SHOTGUN SEAMSTRESS ZINE 1-6.
A collection of six stapled zines. B&w photocopy profusely illustrated. [Portland?]: Self-published, 2006-2011.
A legendary zine put together by Portland-based punk musician and potter Osa Atoe from 2006 onwards. This is a fanzine with a highly personal and often dissenting voice reflecting on a largely white male punk scene. The publication describes itself in an early issue as ‘a zine by and for black punks, queers, misfits, feminists, artists & musicians, weirdos and the people who support us. This zine is meant to support Black People who exist within predominantly white subcultures, and to encourage the creation of our own’.
Incredible cut-n-paste graphics and doodles enliven playlists, essays and interviews. Subjects of concern include Outsider Art, Afro Punk, Sun Ra, Poly Styrene, Bronze Purnell, The Glories, Ru Paul, Trash Kit, Vaginal Creme Davis, Marsha P Johnson, 80s DC Hardcore, ‘Punk through the African Diaspora’, Anti-Affluence Activism and more. An anthology of issues 1-6 was published by Mend My Dress Press in 2012.
