What is 10.21?
First edition. 8vo. Unpaginated with full-bleed b&w photographs throughout. Printed wraps. Japanese texts. Tokyo: 10.21 Publishing Committee, 1969.
An incredible photography publication documenting Anti Vietnam protests that took place across Japan on 21 October 1966. Almost all of the photographs contained in the publication were taken by students who were photographing without access to appropriate equipment or film, often shooting at night and in compromised conditions. The resulting imagery is frequently grainy and out-of-focus, but powerfully conveys the intensity and speed of the protest atmosphere. To avoid legal complications there are no credits and no faces are clearly shown. The book is almost an object of found photography, were it not for its strong political purpose. Created by students themselves this is a poignant social record of the anti war movement in Japan.
