In the House of the Trembling Eye - Allison Katz
In the House of the Trembling Eye is a compendium by Allison Katz that draws out unexpected affinities across artworks and centuries—from Pompeian fresco fragments to Katz’s own paintings, to modern and contemporary artworks tucked away in the mountain valley of Aspen, Colorado. Featuring newly commissioned writing by Katz alongside a number of collaborators, including Stella Bottai, Nuar Alsadir, and Ariana Reines, In the House of the Trembling Eye merges archaeological research, paintings, poetry, essays, conversations, and over 300 color images to reflect on art’s capacity to collapse past and present, time and space. This dialogic pursuit first manifested as an exhibition at Aspen Art Museum, in collaboration with the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. Its unconventional spirit is captured in this publication, an artifact that illuminates some of the fundamental questions about images—how they are made, how they stay with us, and what they reveal about ourselves.
