[Tokyo]: Hanashi no Tokushu, [circa 1975].

A collection of twelve issues of Hanashi no Tokushu with striking, surreal cover designs by Tadanori Yokoo. Hanashi no Tokushu was a magazine of political satire founded in 1965 by the caricaturist Makoto Wada. Filled with radical cartoon strips, and occasional nude photography, the approach represents the mood of the arts scene and subculture of the time, as well as entertaining with its playful content. Its pages showcased new artwork and signalled a shift toward illustration in Japanese graphic design. The publication was established after the influential Persona Exhibiton at Matsuya Ginza department store in Tokyo, to which Tadanori had submitted a poster with the titles “Made in Japan, Tadanori Yokoo, Having Reached a Climax at the Age of 29, I Was Dead”.
