BALDWIN, James.
Another Country.
First UK edition. 8vo. Black boards with dust wrapper. 416pp. London: Michael Joseph, 1963.
The first UK edition of Baldwin's brilliant novel centred around the downfall of a jazz drummer that is set in Greenwich Village, Harlem and France. Baldwin said of his work:
'I think I really helplessly model myself on jazz musicians and try to write the way they sound. I am not an intellectual, not in the dreary sense that word is used today, and do not want to be: I am aiming at what Henry James called 'perception at the pitch of passion.'
