Provenance brings together more than a decade of work by Renee So, alongside new pieces created for a large-scale exhibition at The Monash University Museum of Art, Melbourne. So’s ceramics and textiles are inspired by traditional crafts, cross-cultural discourse and gendered representations spanning from prehistoric to modern times.
The publication’s layout and typographic scheme exaggerate the visual language of historic museum and auction catalogues, echoing the history of antiquities and institutional collections explored throughout So’s practice. The book begins with a standalone visual index of reference imagery before moving on to a more conventional section of So’s works, which are gathered thematically. The works showcased on the extended, wraparound cover are cut out and treated in black and white, creating an ambiguity to the provenance, while the roughly varnished front cover image mimics the texture of clay.
