The Japanese word 'sonomama' means 'in a natural state' or 'just as you are'. To create Sonomama Sonomama, Taishi Hirokawa traveled throughout the Japanese countryside to photograph ordinary people in conceptual fashion garments. Here are fisherman, schoolchildren, farmers, wash house women at work and at leisure modelling clothing by the likes of Comme Des Garcons, Issey Miyake, Kansai Yamamoto, Monsieur Nicole, Yohji Yamamoto and more. Stripped of the artifice of mainstream fashion photography the images are a natural commentary on the relationship between people and their clothing.
