To Open What Is Shut () To Shut What Is Open, Part I: To Bring About Positive Change is a new artist book by Hannah Lees. The publication is partly a recipe book of ‘potions’ and ‘tonics’ devised by the artist and partly an instruction manual.
At Tenderbooks Hannah Lees will create a series of works as a companion to the alchemical possibilities of her recipes. Vegetable dyes and wine sediment will be utilized as vivid decorations for the space while handmade magical incense, freshly baked wild wheat bread and natural wines will be offered for visitors.
Hannah Lees investigates ideas of cycles, constancy and mortality; the sense that things come to an end and the potential for new beginnings. This constancy, be it in in religion, science, history or in organic matter, is visible through her attempts to make sense of and recognise traces of life. Through appreciating this, her work is focused towards an understanding of the essential nature of the materials she uses.
