The Gold Church - Tauba Auerbach
The Gold Church is made up of photos taken at The Basilica San Paolo Fuori le Mura in Rome. The building has a gold-leafed exterior wall that shines brightly when the sun hits it. The windows, given to the church by the king of Egypt after a serious fire in 1823, are made of alabaster, and glow in various yellow and golden tones.
“Chiral Fret (right handed) Typeface” was created for this book. It makes the letters using units of the classic meander fret ornament as building blocks on a 4 x 3 grid, with rotation at the top and bottom center units. This fretwork is ubiquitous in the basilica.
