Tennis Club Manual - Stephen Willats

WILLATS (Stephen). Tennis Club Manual.
First edition. 8vo., unpaginated [12pp.], b&w illustrated manual in stapled paper wraps. Nottingham, Cognition Control/ The Artist, n.d., (1972?).
Wraps lightly creased and yellowed.
A work made for the members of four tennis clubs in Nottingham, who were asked to conceptually remodel the game of tennis around their 'club needs'. The work was driven by two booklet-based questionnaires: this 'Tennis Club Manual' and additionally in 'The I-Spy Book of Tennis'. The books utilised an ironic multiple-choice format referring to accompanying photographs of the tennis clubs or areas in their neighbourhoods. A scarce and highly important book work, this being the first project book by Willats that employed the question and answer format using imagery taken directly from the environment where the project was sited. An interesting example of the artists' use of advertising imagery and techniques, for example the cover design employs two smiling tennis players alongside the slogan 'IT'S A TENNIS CLUB SUPER GIRL'. These Tennis Super Girl Posters formed part of the project and were displayed in the neighbourhood of the various tennis clubs in Nottingham.
