Photographer Kusukazu Uraguchi documented his home town of Shima and its inhabitants for over 25 years. The sea town Shima is located in Mie Preferecture, Japan and with its unique sheltered waters it provides a special habitat for abalone, sea snails and pearls. This beautiful series of black and white photography documents the landscape and lives of the native people, especially the so-called 'Ama' women divers of the region. Here the portraits sensitively capture the working life and traditions of the 'Ama'.
