A handsome press kit/ brochure to publicise the film Die Tochter des Samurai (Daughter of the Samurai), a Japanese-German propaganda film released under the direction of Arnold Fanck and Mansaku Itami in 1937. This was the first of two co-productions between Japan and Nazi Germany. The film starred a 17-year old Setsuko Hara in the lead role, with her character attempting to sacrifice herself in a volcano. Hara would later go on to star in 67 films including Yasujirō Ozu's films Late Spring and Tokyo Story.
Daughter of the Samurai had a poor reception in Japan, due to its exotic depiction of a nation that needed to adopt a German political ideology in order to progress.
