Paul Nash’s Photographs. Document and Image. - Andrew Causey

CAUSEY, Andrew.
Paul Nash’s Photographs. Document and Image.
Second edition. Square 8vo. 124pp b&w photographic plates throughout in cloth-covered boards with dust jacket. London: Tate Gallery, 1975.

Paul Nash worked regularly with a camera from 1930 to 1946. Nash took photographs of landscapes, seascapes, natural phenomena, ‘found objects’ and arranged still lives. His photographs were not generally intended as straight records of places and events but were complementary to his work as a painter. Nash often used photographs instead of sketches for paintings and from 1940s onwards he frequently made water-colours from his photographs. The photographs collected here mainly capture English landscapes, but also include images shot in Spain, Nice and North Africa.
