Gesammelte Werke Band 12 - Dieter Roth

£345.00

ROTH, Dieter.
Gesammelte Werke Band 12.
Thirty six loose printed leaves in a variety of colours, often intricately folded and on many different paper stocks. Housed in an illustrated clamshell box (23 x17cm). Edition of 1000 copies. Stuttgart: Edition Hansjörg Mayer, 1974.

Box a little rubbed. Foxing to several of the enclosed sheets.

In 1960 Dieter Roth won the prestigious William and Noma Copley Award, which included Hans Arp, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Man Ray and Herbert Read on the jury. The prize awarded the opportunity to print a monograph but Roth declined and asked for funding to produce his own experimental artist book. The process of making the book eventually known as the 'Copley Book' would take several years and involved a fragmented correspondence between Roth and artist Richard Hamilton who worked on the book production by mailing material back and forth.

This edition reissued as part of the Collected Works is Roth's facsimile of the 'Copley Buch' published under the Copley Foundation in 1965. Included in the intricate stack of printed leaves are sketches, handwritten notes, correspondences with a printer, source images and samples of paper stocks. Even a copied excerpt of the Grant declaration from the Copley Foundation is enclosed. A fascinating and elaborate edition that lays bear Roth's working methods and highlights the array of 'stuff' accumulated in the process of making a book.
