ROTH, Dieter.
Gesammelte werke band 1.

Grey clamshell box (23.5 x 26.5 cm) printed with black titles and illustration containing two artist books and a loose printed sheet as colophon. The first artist book is bound in a folder of heavy grey card with a spring clip binder and contains die-cut acetate sheets in vivid colours. The second is a spiral bound book containing 28 colour screenprinted and die-cut pages on heavy card. An edition of 1000 unnumbered copies. Stuttgart: Edition Hansjörg Mayer, 1976.
The grey folder of the first artist book is very lightly marked and the box bears a small price sticker. Otherwise the edition is clear and bright throughout.

An extraordinary production from Roth and poet-publisher Hansjörg Mayer, the first volume in their ambitious long-term collaboration documenting the artist book output of Dieter Roth in saleable editions titled as 'Collected Works'. These two artist books described in the colophon as 'picture books' are versions of two publications produced by Roth in 1957, originally titled as 'Kinderbuch' and 'Bilderbuch'. These book objects utilising acetate sheets in vivid colours and die-cutting in geometric shapes command the same magic and purity of form as Bruno Munari's 'libro illeggibile'. Roth's 'Kinderbuch' was originally designed for Claus Bremer's son in whom Roth commented that he had found an ideal audience for his book: "It's so easy, children can't protest. You push it over to them and they say 'aaah circles and squares'".
