Japanese Tattooing. Ransho. - Masato Sudo

SUDO, Masato.
Japanese Tattooing. Ransho.

First edition. Oblong quarto. 143 pp. Full colour illustrations. Clothbound copy in fine illustrated dustwrapper with a hard decorated slipcase. Tokyo: Shogakukan, 1985.
Slipcase a little rubbed and worn.

The scarce first photobook by Masato Sudo dedicated to an exploration of traditional Japanese tebori, or hand-crafted tattooing. Ransho takes an unusual approach to the depiction of tattoo design by emphasising the beauty of the human body as a sculptural object. Sudo's interest in the subject was allegedly first inspired by a truck driver he met with elaborate tattoos.
