Inside the Night - Stephen Willats
Inside the Night Steve Willats.
Original exhibition invitation card (210 x 290 mm unfolded). B&w photographs with text. Folded into two panels. London: Lisson Gallery, 1983.
Cool invitation card featuring a photographic collage by Stephen Willats for the Lisson Gallery show Inside the Night. For this exhibition Willats had transformed the gallery into an environment of the night, with installation works representing four of London's self-organised nightclubs the 'Cha Cha Cha', 'Model Dwellings', 'The Anarchy Centre' and 'Andy & Jane's'.
The card has an accompanying text inside that is printed as if handwritten: "At night I just become another person. Like a star, like an opera star. I once had so much trouble from this guy who's been sort of hassling me, I just said 'you don't know who you're talking to, I'm not an entertainer, I'm a great opera star! Maria Malipasta', and I just pushed him out of the way and walked off. Julian was just screaming, Julian just thought he was so vile."
