SHISEIDO
Two Volumes of the Shiseido Hanatsubaki Annual. 1998 and 1999.
First edition. Quarto. Two large illustrated volumes with over 400 pages in bright printed French-fold wrappers. Japanese with some English text. Tokyo: Shiseido Company, 1998-1999.
Wrappers lightly rubbed.

Two huge annuals compiling issues of Shiseido’s impressive corporate culture magazine Hanatsubaki that began in 1937 and continues to this day. Only 16 Hanatsubaki annuals were published from 1996 to 2011. Gorgeous production with the 12 issues of the magazine assembled into sections that begin with a double-sided fold-out illustration like a poster. The pages feature fashion reportage from the Paris shows, health and beauty, contemporary Japanese art and culture. While many of the features promote Japanese emerging artists and designers the magazine also recruits the coolest figures on the international scene. Included here are a gothic London shoot styled by Stephen Jones, interviews with Sylvie Fleury and Harmony Korine as well as photo essays by Mark Borthwick and Wolfgang Tillmans, to name a few. Plus of course plenty of Shiseido’s iconic styling.
