The book is chaptered to cover different approaches to mask making from those used in religious festivals, Shinto rituals and traditional Noh performances.  From the Kyōgen masks which often take the playful forms of the fox or monkey to the Gigaku masks carved by Buddhist sculptors that were made to cover the whole head.
