The book explores its subject in the widest possible sense to include birds and animals, as well as architecture such as shrines, tea houses and tombs. 

Two essays explore the garden tradition in Japan with extensive notes in English on the featured gardens and their characteristics such as a note on the irises in the garden of Meiji Shrine.
