An architectural photo book taking a detailed look at traditional Japanese homes. The photographs are divided into five sections, each focusing on a different aspect of the home: alcove, entrance, gate, eaves, and tea room. The photographs in each section are designed to show how traditional styles are adopted into modern architectural practice. Each photo is captioned with details of the building including its materials and the sections are accompanied with a short essay by an architectural critic. In the final section of the book we see the residents pictured in their homes using the spaces in different ways. A beautiful, refined look at Japanese interiors that despite their perfection point towards everyday utility in small glimpses of a walking stick, jar of paint brushes, telephone or flower arrangement.
