SMITH, Paul J.
First edition. Square 8vo. 48pp with b&w illustrations in striking lime green and orange stapled wrappers with cut-out design. New York: Museum of Contemporary Crafts of The American Craftsmen's Council, 1968.
A fine copy.
Immensely fun exhibition pamphlet with cool cut-out psychedelic cover design. The pamphlet documents an exhibition of futuristic clothing design at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, New York in 1968. Featured works include the 'Plural dress' by artist James Lee Byars, a child's smock providing a vinyl surface for drawing with marker pens, a leather movie dress inlaid with illuminated photographs operated by a self-contained power pack, and a proposal for a garment that would inflate to form a full length mattress. Sportswear, the Apollo space suit and safety gear are also discussed.
The catalogue includes profiles of fashion designers featured in the show such as Rudi Gernreich, Bonnie Cashin, Paco Rabanne and Ruben Torres. Accompanying essays discuss the psychology of body covering and clothing in relation to environment.
