Natalie Clifford Barney hosted an eminent literary salon in Paris at the turn of the century. Barney had been nicknamed 'the Amazon' by literary critic Remy de Gourmont, and is even referred to as such on her tombstone. Pensées D'une Amazone is considered Barney’s boldest work, encompassing themes of pacifism, feminism and sexual adversity.
This copy is inscribed to ‘Lily’ or Elisabeth de Gramont, one of the principal loves of Barney's life: "Dire a toi seule le nom de on enchantement et de mon souci durable: Lily. Paris, fin Mars 1920".
