S.T.H. : Straight to Hell (The Manhattan Review of Unnatural Acts. Archives of the American Academy of Sex Research (Men))
Issues 47, 50, 53.

Zine/ chap-book (21 x 13.5 cm) in stapled pictorial wraps. B&w explicit photography throughout. New York: S.T.H., [1980-81].

An important early queer zine, S.T.H was hand-assembled by its editor Boyd McDonald, who regarded the publication as an ongoing sexual research project. Material is largely gathered from reader stories to which McDonald provided titles such as ‘The Sweetest Ass in the Sophomore Class’, ‘The Man in the Nylon Jock Strap’, ‘Blowing the Basketball Team’.

McDonald often sent questionnaires to his contributors asking them for more details on their sexual preferences, publishing those that were returned to him. S.T.H.’s philosophy favoured smut over pornography, emphasising an honest and idiosyncratic discourse around sexuality: ‘The truth is the biggest turn-on’.

John Waters, Cookie Mueller, William S. Burroughs, and Robert Mapplethorpe were fans and Gore Vidal declared it “one of the best radical papers in the country.”
