季刊·地下演劇  KIKAN ・CHIKA-ENGUEKI No. 3 (EROS AND THEATRE)

Periodical (21 x 15cm) in b&w illustrated wraps printed with vivid colour in the endpapers, fold-outs and illustrations on various paper stocks. [Tokyo?]: Chika Engueki Sha, 1970.

A quarterly theoretical periodical for radical underground theatre released by the theatre company Tenjo Sajiki. The theatre company was co-founded by Shuji Terayama and Tadanori Yokoo, and their productions were influenced by folklore combined with socially provocative and grotesquely erotic actions. This issue is devoted to the theme of ‘Eros and Theatre’ lavishly printed on various paper stocks. Aleister Crowley features at the centre of the emblematic cover design by Heikichi Harata which sets the tone of the experimental graphics within, with scenes of orgies and protests collaged haphazardly amongst the text.
